Johnnie To's Vengeance at the Gene Siskel this week

Johnnie To's Vengeance is screening at the Gene Siskel this weekend (Saturday @5:15, Mon +Wed @6pm. Johnnie To is my favorite current Hong Kong filmmaker. He directed The Mission, Election 1 & 2, Exiled, and pretty much every good Hong Kong gangster film in the last decade. Vengeance is good but suffers from having a good portion of it's dialog in English. But it is a rare opportunity to see a Johnnie To film on the big screen.

New Tsui Hark film, trailer, Detective Dee

Tsui Hark was one of my favorite directors. From 1983 to 2002 he made many amazing films, The Blade, The Swordsman series, The Once Upon A Time In China series, Green Snake, Time & Tide, to name a few. He has made some ok movies in the last 5 years but his new film, Detective Dee, looks like a return to form. It stars Andy Lau, and has martial art choreography by Sammo Hung.

Closing early this weekend for Retro On Roscoe

The store will close early Saturday and Sunday due to Retro On Roscoe. You don't have to pay the $5 suggested donation if you tell them you are going shopping.

Walking Dead trailer

Here is a crappy cell phone copy of the Comic Con trailer. The image quality may suck but the tv show looks pretty good. It starts in October on AMC.

Die Antwoord playing the Double Door July 14th

South Africa's Die Antwoord is playing the Double Door. They are sort of a cross between Aphex Twin videos and Ali G. I have no idea how the show will be, they made their US debut at Cochella.

The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi

I just finished Paolo Baciglupi's first novel "The Windup Girl" and I liked it as much as I liked William Gibson's "Neuromancer". The Windup Girl is set in a dystopian future Bangkok where global warming is threatening to flood the city, oil has been used up, pandemics run rampant in humans and plants, agriculture is controlled by corporations and political factions are tearing the city apart. The book has many interesting ideas, energy is stored in springs (compressed using human or animal power), and wars fought over bio-diversity. There's lots to think about after reading this novel and I don't want to spoil the joy of reading it.
You can buy from Amazon or get it from the Chicago Public Library

Instore at Hard Boiled Records on Friday

My friend Clark Paterson is playing at the store on Friday July 2nd at 6:30.

Warren Ellis' FreakAngels online comic

Warren Ellis is one of the best comic book writers working these days. He does high profile work (Astonishing X-men) to pay the bills, but most of his current output is for indie comic book companies that allow him and the artists to maintain ownership of their work. He also has a popular blog that is always worth daily reading. For the last two years he and Paul Duffield have published a weekly web comic called FreakAngels, 6 pages every Friday.
FreakAngels is the story of a group of superpowered twenty somethings who have flooded London and destroyed the UK government.

FreakAngels starts here

Hand painted movie posters

Heather and I went to the Primitive art space a couple of weeks ago to check out the hand painted movie poster from Ghana. Primitive has a couple of hundred hand painted posters painted on the back of used flour sacks. The posters are mainly from American action movies, Hong Kong kung fu, a few Bollywood, and Nigerian religious dramas (which are usually part horror or action movies). The paintings were made as advertising for video screenings of the movies in rural Ghana. Traveling projectionists would go town to town and put up the posters to advertise the nights video projection.

The prices start at $7000 and go up to $30,000 for a really nice King Kong (1977 version) poster that could be a Lee Perry album cover.

Inglorious Basterds

I watched Inglorious Basterds last night. I liked it but did not think it was a great film. Better than Death Proof but not by much. I might have liked it better if I hadn't read the script and knew what was going to happen. When I saw the soundtrack listing when the movie came out I did wonder if the "Eastern Condors Theme" was from the Sammo Hung film and it was. He takes the music from Sammo's jumping on metal springboards to kill a guard before he kill his friends. and uses for Eli Roth's buddy taking out one of Hitler's guards. I doubt many people would have gotten the reference and of course "Eastern Condors" is basically a remake of "the Dirty Dozen". The music starts at around 4:20 into the clip.
